DSL

What is DSL?

DSL is an "always-on", dedicated service, similar to T-1s or Frame Relay, available from ISDN speeds (144Kbps) through T-1 speeds (1.5Mbps), but much less expensive. Like Frame Relay, DSL is distance insensitive within the service area, and with several competing telephone companies, DSL "loop" pricing (the line to your home or office) is significantly less expensive than Frame Relay.

DSL speed ranges from 3 to 50 or more times faster than a modem connection. It is a 24 hour, 7 day connection, with no per minute phone charges, no waiting for modems to connect, and no dropped connections.

You do not need to purchase a second phone line for DSL. On the same phone line you will be able to use your DSL and phones as you always have.

How do I find out if it's possible to get DSL at my business/residence?

Click here to place an order or submit your address for pre-qualification to determine if you can get DSL at your location.

Residential/business DSL is now available from Raw Bandwidth utilitizing Pacific Bell ADSL lines throughout most of our primary service area. Distance from your address' serving telephone company Central Office (CO), and quality of the copper wires from that office, as well as our partner phone company's CO deployment, is a limiting factor in availability.

You can also call us at 1-650-802-8006 or email us at sales@rawbandwidth.com with your DSL questions, to find out if service is available and your area, and what the maximum speed we anticipate being able to provide is. Even if DSL isn't available, our sales and technical staff will be happy to help you find the fastest, most cost-effective solution available.

What hardware will I need with a DSL line?

Each computer you wish to use on your DSL line must have an ethernet card installed.

You will need an ADSL bridge or router to connect your computer to your DSL line.

Also, you will need filters (self install) or a splitter (requires tools and separate inside wiring) for devices on the voice line other then your DSL bridge/router. See DSL installation for details.

Raw Bandwidth has hardware available at discounted prices:

- Used ADSL Bridge and filters... shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $119
- Used ADSL Bridge and *splitter*... shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $109 (splitter requires tools and separate inside wiring)
- Netopia R6100 Router and filters, shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $529
- Netopia R6100 Router and *splitter*, shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $519 (splitter requires tools and separate inside wiring)
- Filter pack only (you supply DSL modem), shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $40
- Splitter and weather housing (you supply DSL modem), shipped to you by Raw Bandwidth $25

A limited number of PCI ethernet cards are available from Raw Bandwidth at $15/ea. when ordered with ADSL hardware.

Click here to place an order or submit your address for pre-qualification to determine if you can get DSL at your location.

You can also call us at 1-650-802-8006 or email us at sales@rawbandwidth.com with your DSL questions.

What installation needs are there for DSL?

Pacbell/ASI DSL is presently self-installed. Self installation is tool-less and involves placing filters between each and every device on the voice line with DSL except for the DSL modem itself. We try to help as much as possible with your self installation. Another installation option is a splitter which requires tools and separate inside wiring. A full technical install from ASI is available, but costs $200 (or $150 if done after a failed self install).

Will I have a static IP for my DSL line?

Yes, our DSL services come with one IP usable by your host or computer, or for use with NAT (Network Address Translation) to connect multiple machines.

Multiple static IPs and subnet address blocks are available for additional cost; please see the appropriate service info page:

Business DSL

Can I use a fax on my DSL line?

Yes, all you need to do is place a filter in the socket which your fax machine uses.

An alternative is to use an Internet faxing service which allows you to send and recieve faxes using email.

Can I run servers on my DSL line?

Our philosophy is simple... if it's legal and you can pay your fair share for bandwidth, run as many servers, even high volume websites, as you want on your DSL line. (Spamming is a big no-no however).

Can I use Network Address Translation (NAT) with my DSL line?

While we don't mind if you use NAT, you will need to provide your own device to perform NAT functions. Raw Bandwidth is not providing technical support for NAT configurations on this service.
